Here are some basic rules you should follow when getting a used car loan:
Set Your Price Range
Sit down and do some calculating. Figure out the sum total of all your other financial commitments including your mortgage/rent, food, utilities, and credit cards and whatever is left over from your income is the amount you have to work with when buying your used car.
Don't forget to add car maintenance costs including gas and insurance so you have a ballpark amount you can comfortably pay for the used car loan you're planning to apply for. A good rule is allow about 20% of your monthly income for your car expenses.
Once you have your budget worked out, make sure you stick to it and don't overspend.
Review Your Options
Once you have your budget set, it's time to decide where you can obtain a used car loan.
* Bank, Dealer or Person-to-Person? Borrowing from a bank isnt't your only option, since they may not lend you money for a used car more than a few years old.
Another option is to check online lenders who may be cheaper. There are lots of web sites offering a loan calculator. Just sign-up online and they will send you price quotes.
A third and sometimes the best option is dealing with a person directly. You may want to check out used car dealers within your area. This way, you can ask lots of questions about the financing of the car loan. Dealing with a person directly also allows you to work out the details like deposits and monthly installments.
Research and Do Your Homework
Now that you've determined your budget and where to you'll get a loan, it's time to choose the car you want to drive home. Consider your own needs, and your family's -- if you have one -- and get a car that fills that need.
Choose
Check out what you need to know about the vehicle you're planning to own, considering the speed of the car, the model and the price. Once you've narrowed down your choices, in no time you'll be driving home behind the wheels of your family's new car.
