Watch Out for These Dealership Scams

from: Sports Car Magic

Anyone getting ready to buy a new car for the first time might be somewhat hesitatant to approach a local car dealer because of uncertainty about the car buying processes as well as being concerned about possible dealership scams. If you feel your knowledge about cars and how to get the best deal is limited, you'll want to do some research first to learn as much as you can bevfore setting off to the car dealships you plan to visit. Reading these tips and they'll help you better understanding the possible dealership scams you want to avoid.

The Car Dealer and His Trade

To really understand potential scams a dealship might try to pull off, you should first have a clear picture of car dealers themselves and how they normally go about their business ot trade selling cars. First, a car dealer will avoid giving you a price quote as much as he possibly can because the buyer will just go to another dealer who'll probably offer a lower price thus losing the buyer to the second dealer. Thus they will try to increase their chances of getting you to buy a car from them by trying to get you to commit to them before giving you a final price. This leaves you with two choices: figure out a way to get the dealer to give you a price quotae or start negotiating the terms of the deal with them. If you decide to negotiate, be wary of these tricks:

Low Balling

This is the oldest trick in the book and one of the most common. The salesman will try to convince a buyer that he can give the lowest possible price which prompts the buyer to start negotiating. The salesman will likely tell you the car you want is available for a lesser amount, but as you enter negotiations, you'll discover that you weren't given the lowerest possible price after all. It's just an empty promise.

Best Price Matching

When you tell the dealer you going to look around and check with other car dealerships, the salesman will ask you to comeback after you've gotten the best possible price so he can match their price. However, he knows that by this time you're probably tired of looking around and chances are you'll take his offer.

Trade in Scam

After you've purchased the car, the salesman contact you before your new car is delivered and tell you that the initial pricing of the car was $500 lower and he'd like to collect the balance from you. If you fall for this, he'll sqeeze an extra $500 out of you at your expense.

Spraying

You know the dealer is going to relentlessly pursue you until you give up and buy the car. However, if you decide to buy from another dealer, he may call you and tell you he could have given you a better price and probably upsetting you. The best way to avoid this is to never give out your contact number or some even give a phoney number to avoid having to deal with these irritating car dealers.

Puppy Dog Trick

In this trick, the dealer allows you to take the car home for the night or for an entire day. His purpose, of course, is for you to fall in love with the car and buy it when you return it to the dealer.

Immediate Sale

The salesman gives you a very attractive price, but he will also inform you that this deal is only available until the end of the day. Be careful with this type of proposition as it will make you think too much and in the end, make the mistake of buying the car before checking around to see what other car dealers have to offer.

Extra Accessories

To entice you to close the deal, the salesman will offer to kick in a few extras such as car mats, window tinting and other accessories. The purpose of this is to stop you from asking for a lower price because of the perceived "extras" you'll be getting. This is likely to slow down the price negotiations and divert your attention away from the price.

Cetainly we're all looking for the best deal when in the market for a new car, but we abhor the idea that anyone would try to take advantage of us by the modis operandi of a car dealership scam. Therefore, before you go to your local car dealer, you should have a good idea of what you're going to run into at the dealership. Keep in mind that only a fool goes into battle unprepared and with no weapons. Your weapon is your knowledge, and being prepared for anything they throw at you.
